Iraqi Refugee Known for Quran Burnings Shot Dead in Sweden
Salwan Momika, a 38-year-old Iraqi refugee infamous for publicly burning copies of the Quran, was fatally shot during a livestream at his home in Södertälje, near Stockholm, late Wednesday.
Five suspects have been detained, with the motive still under investigation.
Momika’s Quran burnings in 2023 sparked global outrage, protests, and attacks on Swedish embassies, prompting Sweden to raise its terror alert level.
Originally from Iraq, Momika fled to Germany in 2017, later moving to Sweden in 2018.
His residency was revoked in 2023 due to false asylum claims, but deportation was stalled over safety concerns.
He was set to face trial for hate speech and incitement, but the case has been postponed following his death.
The incident reignites debates on free speech, religious sensitivity, and refugee integration.
