HAL’s HJT-36 Jet Trainer Renamed 'Yashas' After Major Upgrades, Showcased at Aero India 2025

The Hindustan Jet Trainer HJT-36, HAL's flagship jet training aircraft, has been renamed ‘Yashas’ following extensive modifications that addressed its departure characteristics and enhanced spin resistance across the aircraft's full envelope.

The new name was revealed by Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (DP), during a ceremony at Aero India 2025, in the presence of Dr. D K Sunil, CMD of HAL, and other senior officials.

The Yashas aircraft, recently upgraded with advanced avionics and a cockpit, is designed to improve training effectiveness and operational efficiency. It incorporates lightweight features, addressing obsolescence issues with imported equipment through the use of Indian Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).

Yashas is equipped for Stage II pilot training and is capable of performing counter-insurgency and counter-surface force operations, armament training, aerobatics, and more.

It is powered by the FADEC-controlled AL55I jet engine, offering a superior thrust-to-weight ratio, optimized thrust management, and high reliability. Its rear cockpit is elevated with a drooped nose, providing outstanding all-around vision and enhanced situational awareness, complemented by a modern glass cockpit featuring Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD).

The aircraft’s capabilities include stall and spin resistance, aerobatics, armament carriage of up to 1000kg, and single-point ground refueling and defueling.
